Shadows next to the Parasol

October 26 / 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Remembering the lost Cretan Jewish Community – theatrical & educational project at Etz Hayyim Synagogue: www.tanais.de

Performances 19 to 26 October, 8 pm at Etz Hayyim

Etz Hayyim Synagogue and the Jewish Cultural Centre Ariowitschhaus in Leipzig (Germany), are developing the project “The shadows next to the parasol”. This theatrical and educational project is a Greek-German collaboration both on stage and behind the scenes.

This joint project is part of the “2024 Tanais Memorial Year” commemorating the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the Tanais ship during which the Cretan Jewish community perished on 9 June 1944.

The project was initiated and is directed by renowned theater director Jürgen Zielinski. It produces a performative installation at Etz Hayyim Synagogue in October 2024 and theatre-pedagogical material for schools. The performative installation develops the limited available historical information into a collage of scenes which connect the stories of individual members of the Jewish community with the (almost) lost memory of the sinking of the Tanais ship in modern-day tourism-ridden Hania.

Performances will take place between 19 and 26 October at Etz Hayyim Synagogue. Free tickets will be available from 15 September. During the same period theater-educational workshops for pupils and educators will be offered.

“The Shadows next to the Parasol” is financed by the German Federal Foreign Office by funds of the German-Greek Future Fund.
