Darwin a Life in Poems
A reading by the author,
Ruth Padel
How did Charles Darwin and his wife handle the painful gulf between their religious beliefs?
Ruth Padel is their great great grand-daughter – and also a leading British poet, whose connections with Crete go back thirty years. On Sunday, July 19th in Etz Hayyim Synagogue, she read from the book she published to mark the year of Darwin’s bicentenary, “Darwin – A Life in Poems”.
At its heart is a unique love story of honesty, loss, religious questioning and religious faith. We also learned how Charles Darwin grew up, what role suffering and pain played in the development of his theories, which changed how human beings look at themselves, and how those theories grew.
